Looking for a different way to spend a high summer weekend in the D.C. area? May I highly, highly suggest packing up the car and heading out to Green Truck Farm in Markham? A quick 45ish minutes away, this farm is one of our favorite spots. See also here and here.
Be sure to check their Facebook page first to see what their hours are and what’s in before you go.
They have all kinds of fruit and vegetables for all sorts of picky eaters. Parking is easy and plentiful. All you have to do is check in and grab your pints, bags, and box and you’re off to the races. Just make sure you bring a hat…and sunscreen. When you’re finished, take our advice and grab a peach slushie made from the farm’s peaches. It’s the perfect way to cap off a morning of berry and veggie picking. If your sweet tooth is still not satisfied, their apple cider donuts are definitely the way to go.
And, don’t fret if you have a fussy baby or it’s getting a little too hot (it is August in D.C. after all), they usually have produce already picked for you to purchase. We came home with the prettiest ears of corn and a bag of amazing peaches. They also have loads of fresh local honey and preserves if your pantry is looking empty.
Pro Picking Tips:
- Go in the morning right as they open for the best selection and the coolest point in the day.
- Again, bring a hat and sunscreen. It gets toasty along the vines.
- Walk straight past the first two rows. The best picking is at the back where no one wants to trek.
- There are two stops you can – and should – make. One is by their peach and apple fields and the other by the berries, squash, peppers, and tomatoes. You can’t miss them.
- Check their Facebook page first to see when they’re open and what’s in currently.
- Mark your calendar to come back for the fall so you don’t miss pumpkins, sunflowers, and apples.
Also, not sponsored, but I have to tell you guys how much I love my dress pictured in this post. It’s my first time shopping from Mi Golondrina, but after seeing their dresses on everyone in Dallas, I now understand why. They are so comfortable and so lightweight. Absolutely perfect for hot, hot summer days. I truly can’t recommend them enough!
