4 Easy Ways to get Ready for a new Season
I don’t know about you guys, but there always seems to be so much empty space after we take down our Christmas trees and decorations. It’s like we forgot what our room looked like before all of that cheer was added! On the one hand, it’s sad to say goodbye to decorations until the next season. On the other, I love being able to begin a new season fresh and bright – especially when that season brings a promise of warm weather, flowers, and sunny days.
Today, I’m sharing with you guys a few easy ways to get your home ready for the spring (which will come at some point – I’m waiting!). So, without further adieu, here they are:
Frame your photos and paintings. Now is the perfect time to finally go through your wedding photos, those memory cards holding pictures from your last trip abroad, or your favorite Instagram snaps. Switching out your picture frames is an instant refresh and it’s so simple to do.
Add some greenery with a few houseplants. This is such a great way to update your home. Not only does it help keep the air in your house clean, but it helps fight the dry heat coming from your heating system. Just be sure and invest in a mister (like my brass mister here) to keep your plants happy.
Besides, who doesn’t love to see a fiddleleaf fig tree in a beautiful blue and white chinoiserie jar? A few of my favorites are below. Whether you are working with a fig tree or a few succulents, a little green goes a long way.
Revamp your fabrics. Change out your pillows or add a new throw blanket. It’s amazing the difference a new pattern or colorway can have in a room. It completely transforms it. Consider updating your old throw, adding a few pillows with bold or muted patterns, or switching out the books on your coffee table. These minor changes will not only change your room, but will give you a sense of a fresh and clean start.
I tend to get a bit restless if the same colors and patterns are in a room for long. I love having pillows to switch out, and I almost always hold on to the ones I switch out because you never know when you’ll want them back in the room. As long as you stay in the same color family, a new set of pillows or throw can work wonders and turn an old room new again.
Spring clean and go through old items. Get a head start on spring cleaning (see our post on organizing here). Everyone in the world seems to be Marie Kondo’ing their house, so why not start by going through a few of your clothing items that you haven’t worn for two seasons or the decorations you haven’t put up for three Christmases? Donate some to your local charity and spread a little extra joy. This process will also help you identify any gaps in your wardrobe, home decor, etc. so that you can prioritize what you need to invest in this year.
It’s also extremely satisfying to do a deep clean. That means baseboards, the back of closets, flatware drawers, anything you can make time to do. I received Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook for Christmas and it is a terrific resource for this. It has great tips on how to keep up your home, what to clean and when, and how to organize it all. Highly recommend, guys!
