Halloween is a perfect occasion to decorate with candlelight and all of the rich oranges and merlots of autumn. With everything that’s out there from the department stores to specialty boo-tiques (I can’t help it, y’all), it’s easy to go overboard. Too much of a good thing is, well, just too much, and you risk losing out on the beautiful, “little something extra” feeling. You can still achieve a spooky Halloween vibe without all the mass-produced craziness – and it’s actually much easier.
Black candles are some of my favorite things to decorate with when we’re hosting for Halloween. There’s something spooky yet elegant about black taper candles. I buy them up throughout the year. They work with crystal holders, silver, brass, lucite, and just about everything else in between. Low lighting is always so flattering and I love the ambiance it creates. Below are a few of my picks for black candles and candlesticks.
Greenery is another thing I love using. Creeping vines are terrific for adding an eerie feel to your Halloween party. Think eucalyptus, Spanish moss (I recommend using faux Spanish moss to avoid any bugs that may still be residing in your vines), patches of moss, and anything else that creeps or adds an outdoor, forest-like feel.
Wind your leafy, creeping vines around through candles, cake stands, and platters on your table. Or, set them up in the middle of your table in place of a table runner if you’re hosting a Halloween dinner party, winding them around your candlesticks or candelabras and into each place setting.
Consider using tulle or gauze on your tabletop, counters, or buffet area for an ethereal feel. You can find gauze table runners on Etsy (here and here). Try one in a deep wine color or a light or pale grey.
Don’t forget about dry ice. It’s readily available at many grocery stores. Be sure to follow the warning labels and directions when it comes to using it since it has its risks. We placed a few cubes in a container on our candy bar last year. It would also be a great addition to your beverage tin that’s keeping bottles of champagne or wine cold.
