Spring birthdays have all the fun! We had a blast celebrating a Masters themed birthday party for our little guy’s first big day.
Event Space
Since a first birthday is as much a celebration for parents toasting that first year as it is for celebrating the sweet little guest of honor, we wanted to find a place that could fit our crew and also had space for littles and for moms and dads so that everyone had fun. We ended up at the historic Union Street Public House in Old Town and it was perfect. We had food, beverages, and everything taken care of there, so all we had to do was sit back and make sure our guests had a great time. They were wonderful to work with and made everything a breeze.
Bar Decor
The invitations were done by Nico + Lala and I love their suite of custom add on’s. We did cocktail napkins with his monogram, food tents for the table, and water bottle labels that we didn’t end up using (so, naturally, I have 50 labels that will be reused for the next 50 playdates).
The cocktail napkins were placed at the bar, as well as these adorable little tees to garnish mimosas and bloody mary’s. They would also be darling used as skewers for mini pimento cheese sandwiches.
For the littles, I found these golfball sippy cups, which we pre-washed and had behind the bar for water, milk, and juice.
Table Decor
This was somewhat last minute, but as I did a final walkthrough, I realized that the 8 tables needed some kind of decoration. I opted for quick and easy hydrangea blooms in blue, white, and green. It was the perfect little touch and left plenty of space for guests to enjoy a place to rest and have some bites. I also snagged this turf table runner for the main table where the food was placed. I love it so much and can’t wait to reuse it for other events.
The restaurant provided coloring sheets and crayons for each of the tabletops which was such a nice, unexpected touch.
Activities
I took a page out of my friend, Jordan’s, playbook and ordered a ball pit for the kids to play in. There was a perfect space at the end of the room in front of the bay window and we had the ball pit there (pro tip: order more than 200 balls. We later ordered 800 more and 1,000 balls total is the right amount for this ball pit – oops!). We also added a green puzzle piece play mat and a set of blocks (tip of the hat to Ali-Jae who suggested this!). This was a great way to occupy the kiddos in a way that didn’t take up too much room either.
Baked Goodies
We ordered the cake and smash cake from the same place we ordered his baptism cake, Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe in Falls Church. They do amazing work, are family-owned, and their cakes are always fantastic.
It was so difficult figuring out party favors that would still be kid-friendly (aka not choking hazards) and on-theme. We landed on cookies because who doesn’t love cookies? We ordered them from the talented Eleanor’s Custom Cookies and they turned out so cute. I don’t know how she does it every time!
The Outfits
Naturally, this was important, too. Our birthday boy wore this mint and white striped Jon Jon during the party and changed into this caddy uniform that’s been all over Instagram for good reason. The quality is terrific, you can change out the patches and order different ones, and it is the most adorable thing in the world. Spoiler alert: they make matching ones for dad. Great way to repurpose it into a Halloween costume, right?
It was surprisingly difficult to find a green or yellow dress I liked. Thank you, Cameran Eubanks Wimberly. I snagged her super comfortable and flattering yellow and white striped dress as a part of her collaboration with my favorite, Tuckernuck. That plus a pair of Castaners? Total win.
Balloons
I’m slowly but surely becoming a balloon person. I think it’s the same as not being too afraid of bugs. Once you have kids, this starts to go out the window. I ordered these from Party Depot as a way to mark the entrance outside of the restaurant and we tied some onto the highchair and my husband’s golf bag right outside of the room to show guests the way in. Groups of 3 or 5 balloons worked well in green, yellow, and white.
I definitely recommend picking them up the morning of your event and paying extra for the hi float to extend the floating life of your balloons. Party Depot did a great job and this was very much a last-minute addition, but I also plan on checking out Del Ray Balloon Boutique next time since I just discovered them.
Hope this helps you guys out when it comes to planning a sweet and fun Masters or golf themed party!
