Breaking Down Different Ways to Enjoy Polo at The Plains
Twilight Polo, put on by the Great Meadow Foundation, is one of my favorite things about the summer. OK, it is my favorite thing about the summer. It’s the best way to spend an evening. Bring a bottle of wine, a picnic, and friends or family and you have everything you need to sit back and watch terrific polo being played.
There are many ways you can enjoy it, and we’ve tried each and every one of them. Here’s what each of the three most popular tickets look like:
1.General Admission: Purchase a general admission ticket to tailgate on the lawn. All you need in this case is a blanket and your picnic and you are good to go! See what it’s like to tailgate on the lawn in this full post.
2.Tailgate: Buy a tailgate spot on the berm – the hill overlooking the arena. Pack a folding table and a few folding chairs and tailgate in style with a view to match. See what this looks like in our full tailgate post here.
3. Ringside box: A ringside box is for you if you enjoy being right in the middle of everything. It tends to be a bit on the louder side. A box will bring you right up to the arena and comes with a built-in table and six chairs. Check out the photos below for more of what it looks like to tailgate in a ringside box:
All of these options are available for purchase on their site – it’s as simple as that!
Something important to note: Every car will need an individual general admission parking pass. Carpooling is a great way to get to The Plains since it’s about 45 minutes (give or take) out of the city. For those who have attended Gold Cup, it’s right next to where the Gold Cup races are held every spring and fall.
The tailgate spot and ringside box come with a few parking passes, so be sure and read what each spot comes with in the tickets description on the Great Meadow site and be prepared to take a poll of your friends or family to make sure everyone has a parking pass. Additional parking passes can be purchased in advance online or on the night of (for $5 more) at the gate.
Our group of friends will often secure a spot and a few tailgate passes, then split the cost and divide out who’s bringing what (beverages to bites). It’s a fabulous way to spend a Saturday night!
On Saturday, we opted for the ringside box and had the best time. Here are a few photos of our tailgate spread from the evening, which featured a tray of Chick-fil-a nuggets, Allie’s fabulous shrimp dip, Jen’s pesto meatballs, and so much more!
