Add This Room to Your Party Checklist
The powder room is one of those rooms that can easily be overlooked during party planning, but keeping it in nice order for your guests isn’t something that can be…pardon the pun, swept under the rug. Here are a few ways to get your powder room ready for your next party:
Keep necessary items hidden in plain sight. Extra toilet tissue, guest towels…all of these are necessary items. Keep your powder room clutter-free with hidden storage that’s still accessible for those must-haves. We have a pedestal sink in our main powder room, which poses a bit of a problem when it comes to storage. I found this rattan basket at Crate and Barrel and it’s perfect for hiding extra toilet tissue. A handsome guest towel holder, like this lacquered one by Caspari, which is similar to ours, is perfect for keeping your guest towels corralled nicely.
Ditch the mess. If you have a medicine cabinet in your powder room, make sure it’s ready to be shared. We keep a few items like extra hair ties, lotion, mouthwash, and other necessary items in case our guests find themselves in need. Your powder room (especially on your main floor) probably isn’t the place to put your regular toiletry items. If you have a one bedroom, one bathroom apartment, which I’ve had before, consider making it guest-friendly when you’re hosting by storing items from your regular routine in the closet until your guests depart.
Check in often throughout the party. Every time you replenish your appetizers or beverage glasses, take a peek at your powder room. Make sure the toilet paper is restocked, guest towels are plentiful, and things are in good working order. Don’t forget to check on other restrooms as well. If your party is big enough, guests will inevitably wander to other restrooms as needed. This always happens, so it’s a good idea to make sure all of your restrooms are tidy and presentable.
Keep the atmosphere inviting. I always save a few blooms from my floral arrangements for the guest room. It adds a little brightness and extra care. For hand soap, pick a scent that everyone will love (i.e. this might not be the place for your rosewater or sweet scents). My current favorite is this L’Occitane lemon verbena hand wash and lotion. It’s crisp and fresh. Citrus scents are often the best bet for friendly scents.
Consider keeping a candle lit, which adds a lovely ambiance and a soft, warm light. I’m currently loving Jo Malone’s Wood Sage and Sea Salt. It’s a light scent that’s ever so slightly woodsy, but not overly so. You can set out a lovely hand-stitched linen guest towel or opt for disposable guest towels. I love using disposable guest towels and use Caspari’s almost all the time. They have wonderful prints and patterns and are so much fun to change out. The ones used in this post are Potted Palms in white. The porcelain tissue holder (on sale now) is from Kassatex’s Orsay collection, which I love.
Happy entertaining!
