Spruce up a Man Cave, Office Desk, or Den with School Spirit

This was such a fun project that my mom and I worked on together in secret to make it a big surprise for my hubby. He’s a devout Virginia Tech fan, so we knew this was right up his alley. Sidenote: my mom made my Dad a purple tree with Schleich tigers roped on with gold ribbon for his LSU tree. You, too, can make your team’s upcoming bowl game a little spunkier and seasonal with one of these. And it really is so easy.

What You’ll Need:

Clear fishing line

Small (remember, everything is small scale – 2.5 inches or less) shatterproof ornaments (Target has lots)

Football ornaments (or basketball, etc.)

Scissors

Fabric in your team’s colors or licensed fabric bunched up for the tree skirt

Colorful tree (hopefully in the 2-3 foot range – we found the taller one at At Home of all places; this looks like a good resource, possibly this, and Home Depot has some as well, though you really just need to do some Googling or getting out to Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, etc.)

Glue gun

Wired ribbon in your team’s colors (you’ll need enough for garland and a bow unless you find a mascot to use as a tree topper)

More Virginia Tech ornaments here and here

Make sure your tree comes pre-lit, or, pick up a small string of lights or two – just make sure they’re clear or the same color as the tree so they don’t stand out.

First, you’ll want to drape your garland around your tree. Secure it with fishing line or by glue gunning it at different spots so it doesn’t move around. Save some of your garland ribbon for the tree topper.

Next, use the clear fishing line to tie on your ornaments. We did this for the 3-foot tree that was going in Hubby’s man cave. We used the glue gun to glue ornaments onto the smaller tree. It’s much easier and we knew we weren’t going to reuse the tree for anything different – this was clearly the neon orange tree’s calling, y’all.

After the garland and ornaments are on, fashion your bow out of the remaining garland ribbon or top it with your mascot.

Secure any ornaments or garland that looks like it needs it.

Step back, and enjoy! Cheers, and happy bowl season!
