There are certain patterns and color combinations that I love incorporating into a tablescape. A good blue and white combination is one of those. There’s just something so welcoming about blues on the backdrop of a crisp white, whether it’s an Asian or English print. It serves as the perfect base. Just think about the possibilities! You can dress it up with a detailed porcelain charger like this one, or keep it casual with a rattan base for your plates. This combo takes a good brown rattan well, too. Sidenote: I tend to stockpile these – especially at that price!

I love mixing old and new, and will often marry newΒ lacquered chargers like the navy ones I used above with old silver pieces I’ve picked up at an antique shop. Delicate Battenburg lace napkins serve as an anchor between the old and new. You can find similar ones here or on Etsy.

To top it all off, I don’t think there’s a more quintessentially summer bloom than hydrangeas. They’re all over the place this time of the year, and they’re such a versatile flower. I’m a more-is-more person when it comes to flower arrangements, but you can get away with three hydrangea blooms in an arrangement because the blooms themselves are so big. Most hydrangeas also come with the perfect greenery already built-in: those big, dark green leaves. For this tabletop, I opted for blue and white hydrangeas. I also chose to bring in a few ginger jars as accents to mix patterns and keep the table interesting. I found these jars at Home Goods, but Ballard Designs and Williams Sonoma have great selections, too.

Whatever the occasion, you can’t go wrong with this basic blue and white palette!
