Thoughtful Ways to Welcome Your Neighbors
Whether you’re renting or have lived in your neighborhood for a decade, you’ll inevitably be welcoming in new residents. How do you extend that warm welcome? Here are a few thoughtful ways to say hello and forge those new relationships.
- Welcome them with a homemade item, baked or pickled. I always end up making oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with cranberries, nuts (so long as there aren’t any allergies), and coconut flakes. They’re a favorite and since they have all those good toppings in them, they’re basically healthy, right? We’re on a pickling kick (hello winter charcuterie boards) and hopefully will have enough to give out as welcomes for the next new neighbors who move in. For the cookies, I placed them into a treat box with a ribbon tied around it. You can pick up a treat box like ours, this one with a window, at your local craft or big box store.
- Tuck in something picked from your garden. We sadly don’t have a backyard space, but we do have a great little balcony garden with loads of herbs and tomatoes. Once we were ready to deliver our welcome goodies, we picked a small bunch, tore off a bit of a wet paper towel, and wrapped the paper towel around the stems so they would stay fresh.
- Add a little something local. I love collecting Junior League cookbooks from different cities I visit in the south. Purchasing a local one is a great way to give back while sharing a part of the community with your new neighbors. Visit a small business in your neighborhood and pick up a little gift or two from it.
- Bring something to toast with. Bring a bottle of your favorite wine, better yet, a local wine. If one of your new neighbors is expecting, a fun bubbly non-alcoholic beverage is a great substitute.
Be sure and include a calling card with your contact info. Happy housewarming!
